Goldeneye Sõtkas Bucephala clangula
Long-tailed ducks, goldeneyes, whooper swans and Bewick’s swans are migrating, all heralds of the start of winter. The passing migration of goldeneyes usually ends with October, only the winterers remain – ten to twenty thousand individuals.
Pleasantly plump-looking diving ducks. Male birds have bright yellow eyes, the eyes of the females seem white. The head of males with its dark plumage has a green metallic sheen, a round white patch under the eyes, dark back and white neck and belly. The head of females is brownish, white collar, body plumage grey. The beak of males is black, the female also has some yellow on her beak. The feet of goldeneyes are yellowish green.
Diving ducks feed quite far from the shore on jellyfish, molluscs, water-living insects; aquatic plants are on the menu too.
