Fieldfare

Fieldfare      Hallrästas        Turdus pilaris

Nice large birds in the bare landscape, still moving around in groups in November. The number of winterers depends on the severity of the winter. It must be said that fieldfares are not very well known, every winter some photos are sent with the question who is it in the photo?

Including the tail the bird is around 25 centimetres long, weighs a little over a hundred grams. They are busy in trees with getting hold of still remaining fruits, in orchards seeds can be picked out of the remaining frost-nipped  apples and they move around by jumps on the ground because between the fallen leaves something might always be found.

The water-grey head and rump area are conspicuous in the exterior, they are clearly noticeable in flight; lacking in other thrushes and also in evidence in flight are the white wing undersides. The plumage on the back is beautifully dark brown, throat and breast yellowish and along the sides and breast well visible bands of flecks. The conspicuously long tail is black. The exterior of males and of females are similar.
