The snow of the winter month, or sceptre month, only lasted for a few days. A period followed which is sometimes called the dark season. And the forest of the winter month or sceptre month is sometimes described as sombre or dark. But the forest is only dark to those who suddenly come into it from the car headlights or a lighted room. To eyes that have become used to it, it is fascinating, mysterious, maybe a little daunting but particularly a peaceful forest.

It is true that the larger part of the day and night now belongs to darkness. Daytime is twice shorter. But this short day is special. The sun never rises very high into the sky. Thus, when the sun is set free from behind the clouds its light is particularly generous. For photographers this light is the golden light. And maybe the winter or sceptre month is the time of golden light, side by side with the dark forest.
