The mating period of wild boar begins at the end of November and lasts for a couple of months. Adult male boars keep near the herds that are led by sows and if the sows have not sent off juvenile males from the herd, the bigger and stronger animals force the young competitors to leave. Between serious rivals even bloodstained settling of accounts occurs; the males are protected against slashes by adversaries’ tusks by a shield of cartilage tissue at the ribs.
The ground is not frozen and the main food is above- and underground parts of plants. The boars also visit feeding fields set up by hunters and crop fields that have not been harvested because of the abundant rain this year. Animal protein is provided by rooting for molluscs, insects, amphibians and by hunting small mammals. Any discovered cadavers are made use of as well. The traces of activities are quite well visible.
