On December 1st collecting of winter points starts and so more birders than usual might be seen moving around in the beginning of the month. But this first day passed somehow very quietly. No messages at all came by
Rariliin (Birdline) in the morning. Towards evening however information about winter rarities started to trickle in. The most exciting reports came from the island of Ruhnu where the hotter rarities to be seen were the
Lapland longspur,
dunnock, 2
grey plovers,
Jack snipe, 5
common snipes, and 2
wood larks. In addition a
black redstart was seen in Saaremaa at the Suuriku cliff and in Tartu city a
common snipe was seen. I myself reached Sõrve säär in Saaremaa in the evening, tomorrow we will very likely find some belated leavers here too. Information on winter rarities seen in Estonia is on the Estbirding
web page.
