Eurasian jay Pasknäär Garrulus glandarius
This cautious bird shows up in the camera, when no human moves in the garden....
Jays will be well visible in the autumn oak forests, where they collect food supplies. Our most eye-catching Corvidae is the size of a jackdaw, with pinkish-grey plumage. The wing lobes are blue-black-white, in „Estonian national colours“. Backsides of the wings and tail feathers are black. On the beak base are also black markings.
When the jay is excited, the feathers on his head rise up as a little crest. Sometimes it’s well visible in the camera. The jay’s flight is flappy and white rump is well noticeable.
Winter number of the jays is surely over 100 000 specimens, but the counting of winter birds will give us a better result. Length of the jay is about 35 cm and weight is about 150 gr and bit more.
On the feeding ground of the Wild Boar Webcam the jays are carefully watching Mait, the man who brings the food. When the food is served, they are there, some days even six by numbers. Jays bolt 5-6 acorns down into their gullet, the last one taken in the beak and then they’re gone, to hide their quarry for meagre days....
