The weight of blue tits is almost half less than that of great tits, about ten grams. They are seed-eaters, herbivores, only in winter.
Blue tits are alert in the morning. When the first great tits have visited the birdfeeder the shyer but quicker blue tits, more prudent about the surroundings, are in turn. They quickly grab a seed and are gone again. Adults that have already nested spend the winter together. Despite their small size they are quite quarrelsome when a fight for a place at the food table is necessary. Larger and slower birds know to fear the small but sharp beak and claws.
The sky-blue crown is circled by a white headband, males sometimes raise the blue feathers of the crown (see Arne’s photo below). The eye stripe is like a black mask as is the area at the little beak and chin. Some blue at the nape too, cheeks are white. The back is iridescent-greenish, tail and wing feathers slightly darker blue. Yellow belly, with a noticeable darker little band. The sexes have similar plumages.
The estimated winter number of blue tits starts at a hundred fifty thousand individuals. The winterers are mostly adult birds, young birds are driven to Central and Western Europe by their migration urge.
