Common squirrel-tail moss

Squirrel-tail moss is quite common in Estonia, growing as a curly padding on the trunks of old deciduous trees, from mid-way up and up to the crown. In winter and snow it is worth the effort to look for it. This trunk-growing moss tolerates some air pollution, thus we find it in urban parks, cemeteries, avenues and of course in hardwood or mixed forests.
The patches of the vigorously growing squirrel-tail moss are easy to spot. The branches of the stems are up to five centimetres long and the tips seem shiny.
