The winter garden bird watch has become the most popular birdwatching event in Estonia, engaging more people by every year:

Interest was great in the watch arranged for the 3rd time last year in Estonia – 2050 bird friends from 1439 places all over Estonia forwarded their observations, or nearly twice as many than in the previous years. Altogether 45 686 birds of 54 species were observed.

For the third year in a row the great tit was the most numerous species; it occurred in more than 95% of the observation sites and made up about a quarter of the total number of birds observed. The greenfinch secured the second place again, the tree sparrow was third. The numbers of most species were stable, noteworthy decreases occurred in the abundance of the invasive species jay and great spotted woodpecker; a similar trend can also be noticed in the number of partridges, victims to increasing raptor numbers and cold winters,.

Summaries of previous years can be read at:

The key to the great popularity of the garden bird count is the simplicity, because it does not require any in-depth knowledge of birds. It is enough to note all encountered bird species during one hour, and for each species, the greatest number seen at any one time, and then send the result to the coordinator. All who are interested in the birds in their home surroundings can take part. To make identification easier a bird guide and binoculars are useful.
