Dear bird friends!
Many thanks to all who took part in the inter-city birdwatch competition organised by the Estonian Ornithological Society on Sunday.
The number of cities taking part this year was the same as last year – 19 – and participants were 90.
The long drawn-out spring made the competition the most thrilling to date. This year’s exceptionally equal inter-city competition was won by Tallinn where 45 bird species were registered. Tartu as well as Pärnu registered only one species less each. In all cities together only 78 bird species were registered; as many species have been seen just in Haapsalu in the best year. Compared to last year the number of species seen was smaller by 13, and the winning result was the lowest of all times.
In the cities such common early-spring arrivals as the skylark, lapwing, crane and hollow pigeon remained unseen. The most exciting finds today were little grebe, dipper and the newly arrived white stork.
A more detailed summary will be on the EOÜ homepage from Tuesday.
