Horned lark
Horned lark Sarviklõoke Eremophila alpestris
Horned larks don’t stay to breed in Estonia. They are passing migrants that we usually see until mid-April, but this year the passing migration cannot be predicted at all. Some have already been seen.
The size is similar to a skylark’s or a little smaller. The plumage is brown, with a pinkish hint, sides dark-streaked. The black and yellow head and the black feather horns of the male catch the eye. In the female are not very noticeable.
The spring migration is less abundant than the autumn migration which lasts until November. Horned larks have become very rare passing migrants. Individual specimens are regularly encountered at Sõrve säär, Kihnu, Häädemeeste, Matsalu, and also on the north-western coast of the mainland.
