Last week of incubation for Klaara

Tawny owl    Kodukakk      Strix aluco

The chicks of female owl Klaara should hatch in about a week. The intervals between laying the five eggs in the nest were long, and it is not quite clear precisely when Klaara started incubating. We only glimpse Klaus when he brings food to the brooding female at dusk – all sorts of mice, but also rats, water voles and moles. The bird migration has started so a passerine or two may also become a prey.

The weight of a mature female tawny owl starts at six hundred grams. Male birds are smaller, weighing a little over four hundred grams. Tawny owls are a little smaller than hooded crows but their wing span is noteworthy – nearly a meter.
