Great and lesser black-backed gulls prefer small sea islands for nesting – precisely the kinds which are also suitable for webcameras. Approximately five thousand pairs of great black-backed gulls are nesting in Estonia.

Great black-backed gull is the largest of our gulls, the size of a smaller goose with a wingspan slightly over one and a half meters; wings are lined with a thin white stripe and the tips of the wings are distinguishably white.

Lesser black-backed gull is smaller with narrower wings, however both species have yellow bills with a small red spot. There might only be around one hundred pairs of lesser black-backed gulls nesting near Vilsandi.
