Wild strawberry
Wild strawberry Metsmaasikas Fragaria vesca
This spring has been suitable for the development of wild strawberries. The beautiful plants are sturdy, in places even lush. The sea of flowers in the habitats lasts – there is no drought, water sufficiently, and night frosts have done no harm. The wild strawberry flowers are dioecious; they must hurry to make pickers rejoice at Midsummer in sunny spots. This is the first flavour and scent of real summer.
On the northern coast the flowers of the creamy strawberries (Fragaria viridis) are just opening; their habitats are higher hillocks on lime-rich soil. Compared to the wild strawberry the creamy strawberry plant grows taller, its leaves are bigger and glossier and with a blunter tip. The flowers are similar to confusion, setting fruit only in July-August. The aroma betrays the habitat of creamy strawberries but more of this when the ripe fruits show themselves.
