We won`t see or hear reed buntings in the cities, forests or gardens. However, observant nature lovers who go on water at daybreak will hear their short and tranquil chirping. They may be the most numerous nesting birds on river meadows, competing with sedge warbler. It also depends on location – river banks should be covered with high vegetation and reed.
Male and female birds have similar back plumage with brown stripes, bellies are a bit lighter. Male bird`s head and throat are dark black, female bird has a greyish brown head. Male bird sings his tranquil tune on a higher place which provides a better overview. Female bird built a solid twined nest in early spring and the nestlings have already been hatched or are hatching in the nest. Hatched nestlings start leaving the nest from day ten and it is mainly the female bird who will be taking care of the young, while the male bird does it when he „pleases“.
