A week in the forest: wolf pups are growing

Photo presents nature-born wolf pups, about a month and a half old. Photos have been taken on May 29, 2007, at Vladimir Bologov in Tver Oblast, Russia.

Spring-born wolf pups are about a month and a half old by now. The time has come when they also start to eat meat, besides mother`s milk. Now, when the pups have grown much bigger, also the female wolf starts to go hunting, like the male.

After a succesful hunt, adult wolves pack their stomachs with meat and then regurgitate it at the den. Those meat piles are the cause for the first serious fights between the pups, while they try to assert themselves. Otherwise, the pups are moving around actively, play with each other and discover new things every day in the world around the den.

Pups with bigger brothers and sisters are lucky, because they don`t have to be alone at all – they get to play with the bigger ones and it is also safer that way.
