Mating black-veined whites on fern leaf
Black-veined white Põualiblikas
In Estonia black-veined whites winter as pupae, and we meet the butterfly imagos in June and July. They are noticeably large, easily identifiable, and the sexes are quite similar. The body shape of the black-veined whites is very distinctive, with the contrasting black wing lines on the transparently white fore and hind wings.
At the usual drinking places of butterflies, the edges of dirt road puddles, they can gather by tens – a good place for photographing as well as observations.
Seeing butterflies has been held to be prophetic in ancient times. The black-veined whites have heralded good luck ... as well as a hard life. The use of insecticides outside agricultural areas has decreased significantly in Estonia, and increased the number of black-veined whites in places: this definitely means a happier life for butterflies.
