Comma
The comma is more of a forest species, we will probably not encounter them near human settlements. The brown-flecked, brightly rust-coloured wings of the butterfly are jagged at the edges and on the dark underside there is a white, c-shaped mark: from that the butterfly’s Latin name, at first glance somewhat strange, is derived.
The behaviour of the male butterflies is moderately aggressive – they keep their established territory and other butterflies, except female commas, are driven off.
This year’s imagos hatched in July. They fly about until the frosts arrive. Wintering is in withered grass or in moss.
