Isabelline wheatear. Maantee village, Saaremaa, 26.9.2013
Isabelline wheatear Liiv-kivitäks Oenanthe isabellina
The isabelline wheatear was found near the Sõrve säär bird station, in Maantee village, on Thursday September 26th. This creature has not been seen in Estonia previously. It is a species with a south-easterly range, with breeding areas reaching from Turkey to Mongolia. Our nearest nesting areas are in Bulgaria and eastern Ukraine. That the species would stray to Estonia has been anticipated for a long time already; in Finland for instance it has already been encountered some twenty times. The isabelline wheatear should now be the 382nd bird species observed in Estonia (A-C category).
The bird stayed in the same place in Maantee village for 3 days, that is until September 28th; it has not been found later.
