Arborvitae with autumn-coloured twigs

Arborvitae; yellow cedar; white cedar etc.    Harilik elupuu        Thuja occidentalis
We are used to deciduous or leaf-dropping trees. The twig-dropping arborvitae or Thuja has been brought here from North America. In autumn it has many brown twigs, and often it is thought that this cannot be right: is some disease threatening the tree? Leaves and needles are easier to drop off than scales and on the arborvitae old twigs drop off as a whole from the branch.

The metasequoia or dawn redwood Metasequoia glyptostroboideson is actually a deciduous conifer and all its short twigs fall in autumn.
