Roe deer

The numbers of roe deer in our nature vary from place to place. In Saaremaa, Tartumaa and Raplamaa the forming of small groups has been noticed – three-four individuals with the buck moving separately. In some counties, roe deer is a rare sight even for an experienced forester.

Roe deer blend in with the landscape extremely well. Grey winter coat is already visible, but it is not in its full length. The winter coat is different in many ways from the summer one: winter fur is hollow, or tubular – such fur is much warmer and attaches to the skin more delicately. What might be the advantage of that? Roe deer have plenty of enemies and during an attack, only a bunch of hair might be caught between the attacker`s jaws, while the roe deer escapes.
