Old boar at a distance of 12 metres
As usual – end of November and the mating time of the wild boar is beginning. Big adult males roam around near the herds led by sows. If the sows have not driven off the young adult males from the herd the bigger and stronger ones force the smaller to leave. A male mates with all the sows in heat in a herd. Sometimes bloody reckonings take place between adult rivals, but hits by the powerful tusks of adversaries are somewhat alleviated by the shield of connective tissue around the ribs of the boar.
The ground has not been frozen for a long time and the main food are the above- and underground parts of plants; forage fields laid out by hunters are visited. Boars get animal proteins from burrowing for worms, molluscs, insects, amphibians. When hunting for small rodents they don’t abstain from cadavers either. Traces of activities abound.
