Bear tracks can be seen in our forests – no wonder, when you look out of the window; at the same time in recent years frost has been crackling and the ground has been carpeted in snow.
Mainly male animals move around. They have a couple of places prepared for sleeping in, and probably they go there to doze too, with spruce branches and moss to lie on. In addition to the extraordinarily warm pre-winter some bears have also been forced on the move by hunting. A couple of winter nests are prepared just in case. Females, particularly those who are pregnant, will not waste energy unnecessarily if they are left in peace. The bear cubs will be born in January-February, and about sixty females with cubs will be moving around in the forests in spring. The number of brown bears in Estonia is below 700, and mature females are not in heat every year. There will be cause to write again about brown bears in the New year.
For roaming brown bears there are lingonberries as well as cranberries in the forests…
