VIDEO: Winter bird feeder webcam – Blackbird

Video recorded by Aita, LK forum

On Tuesday the blackbird carefully studied how the passerines operated. Until then we have only seen the bird under the feeder looking for seeds. Today, Wednesday,  it made a first attempt that did not go really well, but from tomorrow on the blackbird should already behave as an "old hand". In the video we see the behaviour of the passerines and the relations between them.

Blackbirds settle down in home gardens where passerines are being fed. Most commonly they are a pair or a lone bird – blackbirds are not very gregarious. From the web camera in Arne’s garden we hear the blackbird's calls already in the morning. We will probably see in the next few days how the male bird that is already familiar to us will be shuffling down seeds over the edge – they prefer to feed on the ground rather than hanging  uncomfortably around. They are extremely courteous towards the smaller passerines at the food table. In gardens they peck greedily on apples that have been left hanging on the trees and near humans the all-eating bird almost always find something.

The black bird with golden yellow beak is a male, the female has a modest brown plumage, mottled breast and brown beak. On the ground it moves by jumps or if necessary at a fast run. When it stops the tail is lifted, wings a little hanging and the surroundings are checked. In case of danger it rises into flight noisily but the flight is low and it doesn’t go far.

Adult birds remain here in winter and they can be up to ten thousand. Information about numbers will come in the winter garden bird census summary next week.

The blackbird looks like a rather big bird – length including tail about a quarter of a metre and weight in round numbers a hundred grams.

It is useful to describe the looks of the blackbird and the characteristics in the plumage for oneself from Arne’s photos. All characteristics show up nicely.
