Raccoon dog Kährikkoer or kährik Nyctereutes procyonoides
Because of its nocturnal life habits this alien species is little visible – if you see one there are ten more in the neighbourhood.
In the forest camera we have only seen raccoon dogs once this season. Their ranks were thinned too by scabies (mange) but the mating time has begun.
The raccoon dog pair spend their life together all year round and during the frosty period they slumbered together somewhere in a sheltered spot or for instance in a fox’s den. Their vocalizations are modest – growling and barking, but sometimes really shrill screams are heard at night. Interaction within teh species mostly is by means of urine marking and droppings; body language is important as well. Last year the forest camera viewers could witness this – the behaviour was quite expressive.
