Early morning, seal pups are begging for a meal...

Almost 80% of seal pups on the Baltic Sea are born on the first week of March and the time of births comes to and end with the end of March.

 

The little creatures weigh 11-12 kg-s when they are born and the average daily weight gain is two kilograms. It is gained with a good reason – the seal mother`s milk has a fat content of over 50%. The nursing period lasts 19-21 days and the pups weigh 40 kilograms or sometimes even more by the time they leave their mothers.

 

At the same time, the females lose up to 4 kg-s per day, because they do not feed while they are nursing. 

 

The males are fasting throughout the mating season.
