Peacock butterfly; European peacock Päevapaabusilm Inachis io
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Estonian Lepidopterological Society (Eesti Lepidopteroloogide Selts) a butterfly of the year was chosen – the peacock, familiar to all and present in all of Estonia. It is eyecatching with its beautiful reddish colouring and the large blue eyepatches on both fore and hind wings. The Estonian name, paabusilm, "peacock eye", originates, as in many other languages, from the similarity with the markings on the tail of a peacock. It is difficult not to take note of the active and powerful flier. The peacock winters as imago and thanks to this we can meet it on the first early-spring flowerers and throughout the summer until autumn.
