Already since some days we see owlets peering out of the nest – what goes on in the great world?
On Tuesday the oldest owlets were three weeks old (one of the bigger ones was actually hatched one day earlier). The smallest, a few times smaller, is four days younger than the others. The parent owls have been forced to their steadily growing and hungry chicks even in daylight. The remnants that spill on the nest floor are for the smallest chick – the proper prey is taken by the big ones with the right of the stronger – it isn’t easy for the small one.
In about a week life in the nest box may become too cramped and a struggle to get out of the nest starts, as ever with the biggest and strongest leading. For night, they stay on the nest tree branches where the parents come to feed them ….
