The first reports on finds of nesting of the kingfisher, the bird of the year, arrived at the Estonian Ornithological Society in early May. Apparently all birds have returned from their migration and have chosen their nesting locations. Since the kingfisher is a shy bird we ask you not to disturb its everyday life and on meeting it, to behave in a bird-friendly way. Should you want to observe or photograph the kingfisher, then do so from a distance without disturbing the bird. When noticing a kingfisher while going by canoe or other floating vehicle don’t stay long watching the bird from the boat. Go on, or pull the boat on shore in an out-of-sight place and observe the kingfisher’s doings from the shore.

Also please let us know about all kingfisher observations. The simplest way is to enter one’s observations on the map on the website of the bird of the year: www.eoy.ee/jaalind

Please let us also know about nest finds.
Nest information will not be displayed publicly. Who does not want to disclose their kingfisher locations can send the information by e-mail:

If you pass a river, creek or ditch on foot or by a vessel without engine for a longer stretch we invite you to take part in the test of a new river bird monitoring method. By this we collect information about the kingfisher and seven common river bird population densities0. See more details at:  www.eoy.ee/joelinnuseire
