What does male osprey Ilmar delight his lady Irma with? Sunshine changes the colours of a fish but the fins and tail speak for themselves. For certainty the matter was discussed with Tiit Hunt, author of the handbook on Estonian fishes.
In inland waters the surface water is warm and towards evening tenches are in the upper water layers to hunt for prey. The male osprey weighs about 1 ½ kilos and his catches are fish weighing 200 – 300 grams (tench are mostly this size). The hunt for food can take place up to 25 kilometres away (if there is a shortage of food) and on a long flight it is difficult to transport larger prey.
It is nice to see how male Ilmar skilfully takes over the incubation so that Irma can eat peacefully nearby.
