Badger pair at nest entrance
Badgers are mainly active in dusk and at night, they move along their fixed and well-trodden paths. The eyesight of a creature with an underground nest and active in darkness is not particularly good; their sense of smell helps to keep them alive because they haven’t got nimble feet either. The body is wedge-shaped, length up to sixty centimetres (usually less), tail around twenty centimetres and at present a weight of up to ten kilos which increases towards autumn by nearly half as much more. Black and white bands in the face, the fur coat long, dense and rough.
What do they feed on? Badgers are omnivores, alleaters – they hunt for small mammals, amphibians and reptiles, all kinds of insects and their larvae and snails, rob bird nests and eat juicy plants.
Badgers become sexually mature at the age of two. The mating period usually occurs between April and June but it can last even in September. Our observed animals mated in camera view last week and whether we have to do with young animals or already more mature ones cannot be stated. Females give birth every second year.
