Wild thyme
Wild thyme; Breckland thyme Nõmm-liivatee Thymus serpyllum
For those who have had even a little to do with nature and herbs the plant needs no introduction. “Jaanitee“, St. John’s tea, hints that the picking time for the plant should be around Midsummer. Life shows that the upper green tips of wild thyme together with the flowers can be successfully collected only in July, while at Midsummer only the first flowers have opened. The magic scent of wild thyme can be felt even in August.
The plant grows in dense patches; leaves are a centimetre long and thick. Flowers are small and brightly lilac-coloured and there are many of them – naturally a good honey plant. Grows in dry and sandy areas: sands, sand dunes, heath and other dry sparse pine forests, juniper heaths, on pebble shores ...
Against what does the tea help (1 teaspoon per glass of water)? All illnesses due to colds: lowers fevers, eases influenza aches, works as as a cough medicine, is used for digestion problems, liver troubles and inflammations.
In the old times people called it the ”spell herb”, it had so much power that it even helped against spells that had been cast.
