Grass-leaved orache

Grass-leaved orache; Shore orache      Randmalts        Atriplex littoralis

Plants in the goosefoot or Atriplex genus in the Amaranth family are extremely tough, they manage on the seashore and even growing in the sand.

We recognize the grass-leaved orache from its narrow lance-shaped leaves with jagged margins and the small yellowish green flowerheads. The height of the plant stays below a metre, depending on the habitat. We often see the grass-leaved orache growing in seaweed beds – seaweed is a familiar ”soil fertilizer”. Arne’s photo from Purekkari is from the end of August.
