Corn mint

Corn mint          Põldmünt         Mentha arvensis

The corn mint is probably the most common of the mints. Its flowers are set in circles around the stem in the axils of the leaves; we can see the plant proudly flowering still in September.

Seeing to the name it is worthwhile to look around in fields – even between potato furrows. The soil must be sufficiently fertile and the rains of late have watered the ground nicely. In addition we can find the plant in pastures, ditch verges and in humid forests.

Corn mint is a moderately troublesome weed for farmers: it spreads quickly vegetatively as well as by seeds – a good honey plant has no shortage of pollinators in late summer.

We can make tea with corn mint quite as with peppermint, but there is simply a little less  aroma and medical properties.
