A long video of a magnificent deer bull. The ”male gangs” have not yet gathered after the matings. Towards winter the deer cows, with heifers and calves, and the bull gangs move separately.

 

Deer bulls (stags) are at their most vital at about 10-12 years of age; then their antlers too are most splendid and powerful. The weight of such an animal is just below 200 kilos, body length can reach up to two metres, shoulder height stays under one and a half metres, and such antlers may weigh around 6 kilos – estimated by eye. Every video viewer will be able to count the antler prongs for himself.

 

Those male deer that have more than five prongs on one antler can be considered as adults. Young animals have fewer antler prongs. The age of deer cows hunters determine instead from the wear of the teeth. The number of antler prongs depends on many factors, including the available food, which is abundant in Saaremaa.
