For this season the international migrating bird census at Põõsaspea that has lasted slightly more than 4 months is at an end – a little less than 2 millions of autumn migrants were counted.
The census was arranged for the third time – previously in 2004 and 2009 when 2 million birds were counted in 4 months.
The decrease in abundance has several reasons: the migration of Anser and Branta geese this year passed farther from the Põõsaspea cape. A marked decrease has been noted for years for long-tailed ducks that have been recognised as a globally threatened bird species, and as before their state is not good. This year the preparation of an international protection scheme for long-tailed ducks was started where Estonia also has a part.
