On the feeding ground the layer of soil that was frozen meanwhile has thawed. For serving the evening meal Mait uses ”plates” – white plastic barrel lids, so that the animals will not trample the grains and corn into the peat ground. The slight estrangement on Tuesday only lasted for a few minutes.

 

Foxes move individually already since autumn, they have marked their territories and conspecifics, whatever their sex or age, are not tolerated in the area. This period lasts until February when the mating period make the foxes more mobile. Why does a fox visit a winter feeding ground? They eat grain quite happily at times, but where there is grain there might be mice too moving in the grass. Foxes won’t refuse apples, and finally they have after all to know who move on their territory.

 

We have seen a wolf in camera view several times; it is definitely a killer of foxes. So it is for the raccoon dogs too that spend the winter in pairs and roam around in mild weather. The wolf kills them too, but usually leaves the prey uneaten…
