This wary creature avoiding the circle of light is not out to snatch food. The smells tell about how many boars that visit the feeding ground, for how many of them the heat period has started, how many male boars that rove behind the flock, how old they are … If you want to propagate the species you must know everything and be prepared for everything, even for a combat with another equally powerful boar. The duels of the powerful tusk-bearers are not at all harmless, for the mating season it is even necessary to let a breast armour grow.

 

According to the census numbers from our hunters, in spring 2014 the largest number of boars was in Lääne-Virumaa (1910), followed by Raplamaa (1760), Viljandimaa (1750), Harjumaa (1670) and Pärnumaa (1500). According to the estimates of Peep Männil, head of Department of Game Monitoring of the Estonian Environment Agency, the number of boar in our forests had decreased slightly but with the threat of the present epidemic spreading an increase in numbers would be detrimental. In 2013 around twenty thousand were shot; beginning last year battue hunting was banned, in order to keep the boars more in place and visiting nearby feeding grounds. We have seen in the webcam how the movements of a wolf has disturbed the usual life rhythm of  the boars.
