The editors of magazine Eesti Loodus have been selecting trees of the year from 1996 onwards.
As trees of the year 2015 a pair of shrubs were chosen –  barberry and spindle. The barberry grows mostly in western and north Estonia on the alvars, that is, habitats on limestone ground. Its sour berries with two-three hard seeds can be nibbled in the forest even in winter.

Natural habitats of the spindle are in southern Estonia, around the Koiva river, also on Saaremaa, the Sõrve peninsula. Spindle can also be seen as a ornamental shrub in parks as well as home gardens but tends easily to run wild
We will introduce this year’s chosen shrubs more in detail already in spring.
