Rough-legged buzzard
Rough-legged buzzard Taliviu or karvasjalg-viu Buteo lagopus
Buzzards, the birds of the year birds: common buzzards are familiar to most people, the most frequently seen In Estonia even in winter. Of rough-legged buzzards, a small number spend the winter in Estonia, but with the spring migration they move back to their northern nesting areas. In their place the honey buzzards arrive here in April from their wintering areas.
Identifying them takes some training. Their size is roughly similar, as is the flight image. The rough-legged buzzard leaves a bright impression (slightly yellowish colour) and the common buzzard a darker impression in flight, but on a winter day with poor light this knowledge is not enough.
