Starlings already in all Estonia

The arrivals now are mostly males who have already nested earlier. Because they are birds that are extremely true to their nesting places those who have arrived look up their nest boxes from the previous year and as a rule they also stay there in the nights. They sing to show their presence but otherwise live a bachelor’s life.

The females can be expected after one or two weeks; it depends on suitable migration weather. They often start clearing the nest box from old debris together. And no worries, the ground in the familiar neighbourhood is free from snow, food should be there too, and even a snowy day will not make them go back to the south.

The birds have their beautiful spring-time look: golden beak, blackish plumage shimmering in metallic green and purple hues in sunshine, a short tail, and note the pink legs of the starlings. Length about twenty centimetres, weight 70-80 grams.

But should you want to craft a nest box or two for your garden together with the younger of your family and set them up, then you are not too late at all. All new living places are happily taken over by the birds. Starlings breed near our houses and in quite strange places too because the apartment shortage is great. The number of nesters is between 50 000 and 250 000 pairs.
