On the long migration to the nest sites the stork flocks fall apart: a part of the storks, mainly males, start longing for their nests. It is also influenced by competition: rather be in on the site than be forced to fight for one’s home with a strange stork. Of course it is also nice for the nestplace-bound birds to receive their mate as ”masters of the nest”; the joy of meeting again is well known to all ….

Mating displays begin quite soon after the arrival of the mate: loud beak clatter, heads turned back, many tender moments accompanied by swishing of wings  - one can stand a long time looking at the birds. There are no calls since the vocal chords of storks have regressed.
For many who have a stork nest near home the arrival of the white stork pair announces the real start of spring.
