Between two gales Mart Jüssi managed to survey the seal situation on the islet. Six gray seal pups were still roving around, the mating of adults was past and moulting about to begin.

 

What happened then on March 26th to the web camera? Olle Koert, from Teetormaja OÜ that provides Internet communications in Saaremaa: a young ”technology-minded” gray seal pup had moved into the camera control system box, torn at the wires and chewed a little at them too, and left a large part of its baby fur hairs there. Any technical parts did not have to be replaced but Olle had to put in new wires ….

 

The adults will surely turn up and a couple of pups are also visible in camera view – the creatures seem never to want to get into water. Luckily they have enough stored fat from the mother’s milk, and hunger will eventually drive them into the sea.
