  Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaėtos

Inlands you may meet a slim-bodied raptor in the winter – the golden eagle. The white-tailed eagle and the golden eagle both spend the winter in Estonia, plus  migrants coming in from the north in addition. An estimate of the winter numbers would be up to two hundred birds.

Arne’s photo at the top of the page shows a juvenile bird’s characteristic white markings on the undersides of wings and tail. The flight image of an adult bird seen from below is quite sombre and threatening. The basic colour of the plumage is brown, the forehead of an adult is dark brown, with golden brown crown and nape. Black beak and yellow cere.
It is a powerful bird with a wingspan averaging two metres. Whereas the male bird may weigh up to 3,5 kilos, the weight of the female can be up to a couple of kilos more.

Habitats include bogs and moors and bordering areas, always where interference is minimal. Winter food is often carrion. Hunting prey is mountain hare, black grouse, capercaillie, hazel grouse, even ravens, less frequently squirrels, martens, raccoon dogs and roe deer.
