When hunger is satisfied it is time to learn for life. The whole family is alerted by the calls of a crane.
The bittern chicks noticed some threat at about half past two and were gone, quick as a flash, from the nest, each in its own direction. After a few minutes they crept silently back into the nest – they know to be wary indeed.
In daytime they lounge about, heads over the nest rim, looking for small fish, and occasionally even catching one. They go on short trips on their own every day and the nest surroundings are becoming familiar.
