On Monday morning, at 8.15 in the morning, the female fed the young and so they were gone. We were hoping that they might yet appear again in the evening, to spend the night in the nest.

 

Still, we were lucky that the bittern only had two young; in case of a larger clutch, for instance 6 chicks, the nest would certainly have been abandoned earlier. We could enjoy watching several weeks of the doings of the interesting and very  secretive female bird and her offspring.
