Golden jackal Harilik šaakal Canis aureus
Of our native Canidae species they are probably the most vocal. As for exterior the jackal may from a distance look like a domestic dog: body length about 80 centimetres and weight around 10 kilos; the females are about 1/10th smaller than the males.
For habitats they prefer thickets, shrubs and on the coast juniper stands and reedy areas. In nature in Estonia they are food competitors to foxes as well as raccoon dogs; the latter are abundant anyway.
Solitary individuals have been encountered inland: they are likely to rove around.
