In our water bodies - rivers, lakes and the sea - the very low water level continues.

 

The water level in the Baltic has not been as low this year as it is now. On Friday the level fell half a metre below usual, now it is a few centimetres higher. Salmonids have difficulties to get to their spawning areas in the rivers. In the second half of this week a south-westerly storm is expected which should raise the water level significantly.

 

The Baltic has an area of 373 000 km² and including the Danish Straits and Kattegat, 415 266 km². The volume of the Baltic is 21 721 km³ and the average depth 52 metres. So anyone can quickly calculate how much water that has flowed out through the Danish Straits to give a half-metre minus, and what this volume weighs.
