Late white stork

White stork    Valge-toonekurg      Ciconia ciconia
Each year some white stork ”oversleeps” the migrating date. In October last year such a bird was moving around in the Laeva area. It seemed to be on an earthworm diet, as white storks are in early spring.

This year a solitary white stork has been seen in Rapla County; the bird was looking for food in hayfields and dredged ponds, the night it spent on top of the chimney of the Alu manor old economy building.

White storks were also seen on the birdwatching days on October 3-4 in Tartu County, Kärevere and West Viru County.

This summer a white stork pair bred in Finland probably for the first time. Antti Karlin writes to us - original letter below.

In Finland probably the first white stork nest in our history was in the summer of 2015, in the Koski municipality, and it was a very popular family: LINK

Of the three chicks the first one died young, the fate of the second was a power line, but the third went on migration with its mother. It has a blue-and-white ring on its leg and it would be splendid if, when the birds migrate back in spring, somebody would watch the legs of the storks too.
Waiting for what 2016 will bring, and -

Happy  bird-watching,

Antti"
