Beavers are prepared for the northern winter.
Even though the cold and snowy darkness will not come they still prepare a solid winter store for themselves. The collected willow and birch branches are gathered near the den so that it will be convenient to fetch them when needed. They must be accessible from under the ice cover too. The cold water is an ideal refrigerator – the thin branches and bark are kept fresh and full of sap until spring. If winter with thick snow does not arrive they will of course continue their usual foraging trips. The winter store is partly pushed into the bottom mud and the remaining heap is sticking out of the water.
